Linux Systems Engineer - Remote
With your extensive experience in Linux engineering, you know how to build systems that are secure, reliable, and optimized for performance. In this role, you’ll bring that expertise to challenging and impactful projects, focusing on customizing Linux distributions and fine-tuning kernel configurations for environments in which security and reliability are non-negotiable. At Cyberspatial, your work will directly contribute to systems that support national security.
Responsibilities
- Customize and fine-tune Linux kernels for optimal performance, security, and stability in specialized environments.
- Build and maintain custom Linux distributions tailored to meet specific organizational requirements.
- Implement system-level configurations to ensure maximum efficiency of CPU, memory, I/O, and other critical resources.
- Develop, maintain, and document automated tooling for configuration management and deployment.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex system issues in a methodical and efficient manner.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align Linux-based systems with broader security and performance goals.
- Stay informed on the latest developments in Linux security practices, kernel updates, and performance enhancements.
Skills and Experience
- Must hold, or be open to attain, a Top-Secret security clearance.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in Linux system engineering, kernel tuning, and custom distribution development.
- Strong expertise in Linux kernel internals, with experience in subsystems such as scheduling, networking, and memory management.
- Proven ability to create and maintain custom Linux distributions using tools like Yocto, Buildroot, or similar.
- Advanced scripting and automation skills (e.g., Bash, Python, or Go) to streamline system tuning and configuration processes.
- Hands-on experience with SELinux, AppArmor, or other Linux security frameworks.
- Proficiency with system performance analysis tools (e.g., perf, strace, sysstat) and tuning techniques.
- Strong understanding of hardware and low-level driver interactions.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in computer science, engineering, or related technical fields.
- Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and CI/CD workflows.
- Clear communication skills with a proven ability to document processes and mentor newer team members.
