The OVW Deputy Director for Tribal Affairs is a statutorily mandated position created by Title IX, Safety for Indian Women within the 2005 reauthorization of VAWA. The Deputy Director for Tribal Affairs, under the guidance of the Director of OVW, holds the authority to collaborate across governments and agencies to implement the Tribal provisions of VAWA and its reauthorizations. The establishment of this position stems from the longstanding policy of a government-to-government relationship between Indian Tribes and the United States. This position serves as the leader of OVW's Tribal Affairs Division and advises the Director concerning policies, legislation, implementation of laws, and other issues relating to domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, stalking and sex trafficking (VAWA crimes) in Indian Country. In this role, the incumbent provides leadership in establishing and maintaining effective management processes and performs a variety of policy and program development activities in collaboration with the Director, Principal Deputy Director, Deputy Director Grants Development and Management Division, and Legal Counsel Division.
